What are Wacky Tat books?
Wacky Tat books are decodable. Readers can get practice with words and sentences that match the sounds they’ve already learned, boosting their fluency and their confidence. These are perfect for young learners, struggling older readers, and kids with dyslexia. Books are available for the first four stages to help your child start their reading journey on the right foot. More stages are on the way.
Wacky Tat books are aligned with the UFLI Foundations program.
Wacky Tat books cover the earliest lessons in UFLI’s carefully developed scope and sequence — so well that they’ve listed them in their exclusive Decodable Text Guide!
Wacky Tat books cover individual concepts one at a time. Just like UFLI, Wacky Tat’s Stage 1 starts by teaching alphabet letter-sounds (like A, M, T). The first book has only 4 letters and only one letter is added in each subsequent book, making them some of the earliest decodable texts that can be used with UFLI. Stage 2 books teach consonant blends (like fl, mp, str), Stage 3 books teach consonant sounds (like ck, sh, wh), Stage 4 uses words with silent E’s.

Step by Step
Each stage introduces a new set of sounds with increasing complexity, starting with learning the basic alphabet letter-sounds in Stage 1 (like A, M, T). Your child only needs to know 4 letters to read the first book, making Wacky Tat books the earliest books your child can read on their own

Activate, Build, Consolidate

- A - Activate books introduce one new sound at a time.
- B - Build books review sounds progressively as they are taught.
- C - Consolidate books offer practice with all the stage’s sounds and introduce useful common words.
